Runway to Reality: Fashion Culture Clash
It seems like I’m not the only one who is obsessing over cultural fashion, Fall 2011 runways are bursting with beautifully embroidered clutch bags and embellished turbans. When Eastern fashion clashes with Western fashion, you get quite a beautiful collaboration; I don’t think a lot of people realise how much of our clothing is influenced by other countries and cultures.
Nisha’s Summer collection 2011, sporting a beautifully embellished turban; these turbans found their way to Sex and the City 2.
Krizmah’s Joshi Bag is inspired by the traditional annual spring fesitval of Kalash.
Simone Camille’s bags are made of antique fabrics, each one being unique one-of-a-kind, it’s a no brainer as to why Simone Camille’s bags are celebrity favourites!
And finally, my favourite bag is definitely this gorgeous clutch bag by Chinyere. I managed to pick up a look-a-like at a Khaadi - hadicrafts store.
Denim has always been in the spotlight. Teen Vogue’s August issue sees huge features on denim, as I found in numerous other magazines. I made a denim clutch bag last season, I love the practicality of using denim pretty much everywhere. I was overwhelmed when I first laid eyes on this denim clutch bag embellished with traditional Pakistani and Indian patterns. It’s the perfect bag for people seeking a bit or Western fashion mixed with a little Eastern, which is exactly what I love!
Henna is another art that Pakistanis take great pride in, it’s all so intricate and delicate, most would expect these patterns to take hours to create, but the people who know their stuff can create fascinating patterns in minutes with their eyes closed! I will arrange a post on the art of henna later, and a little DIY on how you can make and use henna yourself!
The chunky studs and thick plaits are embedded in neon embroidery and layers of denim.
And it didn’t stop there! I found a pair of denim khussa shoes from Khussa Mahal. It’s so intricately designed, it’s hard to believe that thousands of these are handmade each day!
I will be on the hunt for more east-west collaborations, I don’t think there’s anything better than wearing your culture.
